John Madden, sometimes known as John Earl Madden, was a sports broadcaster, coach, and player in the American football league. He coached the Oakland Raiders of the National Football League (NFL) for a total of ten seasons, beginning in 1969 and ending in 1978. During that time, the team won Super Bowl XI (1977).
Following his retirement from coaching, he continued to serve as a colour commentator for NFL telecasts until 2009, during which time he was awarded 16 Sports Emmys for his performance. Since 1988, he has contributed his expertise and colour commentary to the John Madden Football video game series. His name is also associated with the franchise (later Madden NFL).
